Paris
I only made it through to page 114 and Nicaragua. (Readers of this blog will know what I’m talking about.) Paris is obsessively repeating that Wilsonian liberalism isn’t necessarily curing the problems afflicting the deeply troubled societies (or DTS) that he studies in this book. If he finds a situation that seems to contradict his thesis, he finds a simple way to discount it. (Croatia is a point in case.) This is a fairly smart book by a very smart writer but this is simply not good enough. I might in fact now just skip the case studies and proceed to the more theoretical sections and policy recommendations.
Having said that, not much posting over the next few days. M. is traveling and I’ll be finishing my article and couple other things.
